A Mongrel Mob associate barked at the judge as he was jailed for 16 years over the sustained abuse of his former partner.
Patrick Kohu was jailed on Friday for abuse that Justice Collins described as the most disturbing he had come across in his 35-year career.
In December last year, Kohn, 53, was convicted on all 16 counts of assaulting and raping the woman.
The court was told he regularly attacked her over a period of 19 years. Most of the charges were historical, but a particularly brutal incident in Stoke last year motivated her to contact police.
Justice Collins said the impact of his offending on her has been devastating.
"It was very clear from her evidence that your offending has had a profound impact upon your former partner. Her victim impact statement left no room for doubting the devastating effect of your offending on her life.
"She is suffering post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychological conditions as a result of the persistent way you abused and tormented her."
As Justice Collins finished delivering his sentence at the High Court in Nelson, Kohu barked loudly. He must serve a minimum non-parole period of eight years.
Detective Neil Kitchen, who led the investigation into Kohu, said the woman has been incredibly brave coming forward.
"I'd say she's probably endured almost 20 years of horrendous abuse and I think she reached a point where she realised she had to literally do something to survive. I hope that people in any similar situations will take encouragement from this lady's strength and stand up against their abusers."
