Costings for Petone stadium revealed

Costings have been revealed for a proposed 10,000- to 12,000-seat stadium in Petone which could become home for the Wellington Phoenix football club.

Lower Hutt's Communities Facilities Trust and the football club said the ground is estimated to cost between $44 million and $48 million, with $25 million proposed to come from the Hutt City Council.

The proposal is due to be discussed at a council meeting in February.

Phoenix club owner Gareth Morgan said the club loses money every time the team plays at Wellington's Westpac Stadium, so a new home is needed.

The Petone Rugby Club, which uses the ground, said it was never consulted about the plan.

But the trust said all affected parties would be consulted in coming weeks. Chairperson Alister Skeene said the stadium would be a community ground that benefits the whole of Lower Hutt.
