A medical specialist has told an inquest into the death of a woman and her baby that the outcome would not have been changed if they had been taken to hospital immediately after the birth.
Casey Nathan, who was 20, died six hours after giving birth in May 2012 and her son Kymani died two days later.
Ms Nathan suffered problems during the birth at the Huntly Birthing Centre including a massive haemorrhage, and her son sustained brain damage during the delivery, which was attended by midwives.
Dr Aiden O'Donnell, an obstetric anaesthetist at Waikato Hospital, said that by the time an ambulance was called the damage was done.
He said the earlier the two could have been admitted the better but he could not say if either could have been saved.
Dr O'Donnell said by the time Casey Nathan was admitted to hospital, her blood loss was severe.
