Freedom camping worries minister

The Conservation Minister is calling for a clampdown on freedom camping in his Nelson constituency.

Nick Smith says freedom camping at sites such as Millers Acre has got completely out of control this summer.

Up to forty campervans park each night in the central city to avoid campground fees, many at a car park is immediately adjacent to the multi-million dollar Department of Conservation and tourism information centre.

Dr Smith says he's received numerous complaints saying the makeshift campground is making Nelson look cheap and shabby.

The city council currently allows freedom campers in the city centre provided they are close to a public toilet.

But Dr Smith is calling for the council adopt a similar policy to other councils around the country which ban from urban areas all campervans which are not self contained.
