Agency still mulling capital road option

The Transport Agency says it is still undecided on whether to build a controversial road through a rural valley near Wellington or to widen the existing State Highway 1.

At an open day on Saturday, the agency explained both options to potentially affected residents from Takapu Valley and people living parallel to the highway.

Option D - the Takapu Valley link road - would be two lanes wide and cost about $250 million.

Option C - widening the highway by adding two lanes to make it six across - would cost about the same.

Transport Agency manager of roads of national significance, Selwyn Blackmore, says each option would affect about 40 property owners.

He says there is no preferred option and a decision rests in public feedback and from local authorities giving their preference.
