Runners ran too long in half marathon

Organisers of a weekend half marathon in Wellington are apologising after a misplaced marker meant runners ran longer than the correct distance.

Fourteen thousand people turned out in the capital for the Round the Bays event on Sunday which included a 6.5km fun run or walk, a 10km run and a half marathon.

Sport Wellington said the halfway marker for the half marathon was 600 metres longer than what it should have been.

Event organiser James King said the organisation would consider adjusting official times for the half marathon to reflect the correct distance and this sort of slip-up wouldn't happen next year.
