Contractors clearing a site for a new bridge in Canterbury have unearthed artefacts from an earthmoving contract of times gone by.
Ground-clearing activities for piling at the site of the new Ashley Bridge have revealed tools and implements probably used to build the existing bridge. They include metal shovel heads, pick heads, plates, cups and spoons.
An Opus consultant archaeologist, Nick Cable, says it is likely they're from the construction camps of around 1912, when the current bridge was opened.
