A Wellington foodbank is being investigated for fraud after it was found almost none of its donations went to those in need.

A total of $770,000 has gone to the Wellington Foodbank Service since 2010, but only about four percent of this figure went to charity.

The Department of Internal Affairs says Michael Hawkins was the founder and main beneficiary of the charity.

The company is now in liquidation along with another related business, Wellington Food Angels.

The liquidator, Pricewaterhouse Coopers' Jeremy Morley is assisting police and IRD with their investigation.

He says they have not yet tracked down Michael Hawkins, an undischarged bankrupt.
