A Masterton toddler taken to hospital after an alleged assault remains in a stable condition.

Two-year-old Caleb Skinner was not breathing when he was found at his home on Monday with serious head injuries and bruising to his body.

He was taken to Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital where he was put into an induced coma.

The hospital said his condition changed on Wednesday night from critical to stable and has stayed the same since.

A 39-year-old man, who lived at the boy's house but is not related to him, has been charged with assaulting a child.

The police said further charges were being considered.
