Lucky escape for Auckland teenager

6:27 am on 17 March 2014

An Auckland father says his teenage son was lucky to escape when a massive tree fell into his bedroom during the weekend's high winds.

The tree crushed the corner of the Birkenhead home and flattened a caravan next to it.

Andrew Malmo says it was lucky his son had shifted his bed away from the window about two weeks ago.

Andrew Malmo says when the 12 metre tree came through the house it sounded like the roof was being ripped off, and sent plate glass flying.

"It just makes you very aware of what plate glass windows do when they smash in a storm."

He says one piece of glass shot into his son's hand like a bullet.

Mr Malmo says fortunately his son, Josh who is 16, had moved his bed away from the spot where the tree hit, just two weeks ago.
