Police in Bay of Plenty say they are making positive steps in their hunt for the killer of a roadworker, George Taiaroa, as the first anniversary of his death approaches, on Wednesday.

The 67-year-old was shot while manning a stop-go sign near Atiamuri, south of Tokoroa.

Police have always maintained they know why Mr Taiaroa was killed, and say they still have only one prime suspect.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson says every avenue they have explored simply reinforces their belief about what happened and why.

He says a blue Cherokee vehicle, seized a few weeks after the killing, is still a part of the investigation.

Mr Anderson says while he's still not prepared to discuss the motive, his view that it would appall any reasonable person hasn't changed.

He says the public need to be clear the investigation is still very much alive and any help they can offer would be appreciated.
