Govt 'lacking' on Pacific languages

A group of Auckland educators says the Government is not doing enough to help Pacific pupils prosper at pre schools and is in danger of repeating mistakes made with Te Reo Maori.

The comments follow a parliamentary select committee recommendation of Pacific involvement in early childhood education, through bilingual support.

The parliamentary select committee has recommended boosting low numbers of Pacific children in early childhood education, through bilingual support.

But the Auckland Languages Strategy Group says the inquiry's recommendations were ambiguous to start with and the Government's response isn't any better.

A spokesperson for the group, Sharon Harvey, says the Government doesn't outline any specific plans such as professional development or support for Pacific language speaking centres.
