Prosecution stayed over baby death

The Solicitor-General has stayed the prosecution of a Lower Hutt woman accused of killing her child.

The woman, whose name and other details have been permanently suppressed, had been charged with infanticide but in the High Court on Friday Justice Young formally entered the stay of prosecution, meaning the case will not go to trial.

The charge was laid in September 2012 after a dead baby was discovered wrapped in a towel in the garden of a Lower Hutt property.

A man charged with sexually assaulting the woman is to be tried in the High Court later this year.
