The Law Society is warning lawyers to beware of an e-mail scam from a fake Japanese lawyer asking for help with a divorce settlement case.
Law Society spokesperson Geoff Adlam says it is the latest in a string of email scams targeting lawyers throughout the world.
Mr Adlam says the name of the Japanese law firm is genuine but the lawyer is fake and uses a Yahoo email account.
Under the scam, lawyers deposit a cheque from an alleged client's spouse and then send money to the scammer, only to find out later that the cheque is forged and cannot be cashed.
