Principals underpaid last year

More than 200 secondary school principals are to be reimbursed after they were underpaid last year.

Principals missed out on amounts ranging from $50 to $1500 after the Ministry of Education changed the way it funds enrolments in trade academies run by tertiary institutions and schools.

The Secondary Principals' Association said the enrolments should have been included in the calculation of principals' pay, but were not, resulting in 203 principals underpaid an average of $390.

The problem was not caused by the Novopay payroll system, the association said. Novopay was introduced in September 2012 and despite attempts to fix it has continued to make salary errors including non-payment, overpayment, and problems with tax and holiday pay.
