Maqbool Hussain, who was killed in a violent attack at the weekend, is the third rough sleeper to be killed in Auckland in less than a year.

The 48-year-old's body was found in a squat on Dominion Road in Balmoral on Monday.

Auckland City Missioner Diane Robertson says homeless people are easy targets.

Ms Robertson says many sleep in exposed places and are incredibly vulnerable to violence.

She says there is not enough housing specifically for those people.

Police are collecting collecting CCTV footage from nearby shops, and speaking with residents and workers, trying to piece together what happened before Mr Hussain was killed.

They say he died in a violent attack sometime between Saturday evening and Monday morning.

Detective Inspector Chris Cahill says officers have finished their scene examination.

He says there's no obvious motive for Mr Hussain's death.

Ms Robertson says she doesn't think Mr Hussain was deliberately targeted, a view backed by Wilf Holt, from the Auckland Rough Sleepers Initiative, who says he doesn't think any of the three rough sleepers were deliberately targeted.
