End of line for Christian music festival

The Parachute music festival has come to an end.

Organisers of the country's longest-running event say it's no longer viable financially and this year's event in January was the last.

The Christian festival has attracted tens of thousands of fans every year to Hamilton since it began in 1992.

Founder Mark de Jong, said they reduced ticket prices, slashed operation budgets and did many other things to try make the festival work.

However, it became increasingly harder to run a festival of its size in a saturated events market.

Mr de Jong said the festival's end is a disappointing blow, but the last thing he wants to do is ruin its legacy by pushing it past its natural conclusion.

All of those who have pre-purchased tickets to the Parachute festival next year will be refunded.
