Hunter rescued from Fiordland ledge

A hunter winched off a cliff ledge in Fiordland is being praised because he made himself so easy to find.

The man had to spend the night tied to a tree on the ledge to stop from falling off.

The Southern Lakes rescue helicopter attempted to rescue him on Monday night, but had to return the following morning with alpine cliff experts because of the terrain.

Operations manager Lloyd Matheson told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme the hunter was totally prepared for an emergency.

Mr Matheson says the locater beacon it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to find the hunter.
