It may be several days before a formal identification can be made of a body found in the Waikato River in Hamilton about 2.30pm on Sunday.
The body was found in an area of bush near the suburb of Riverlea and police used a boat to recover it.
A post-mortem was being carried out on Monday.
A 70-year-old man, Trevor Smith, has been missing in the city for three weeks and police say they are liaising with his family.
