Principals set policy conditions

Primary school principals have told the Government what they are prepared to accept in its $360 million plan for creating 6000 new roles for top teachers and principals.

The Principals Federation on Monday released the conditions for its continued involvement with the policy, which will appoint lead and expert teachers and principals to work in groups of schools.

The federation says the policy must be based on evidence and advice from academic experts, must not rely solely on the national standards and NCEA as measures of teacher and school performance, and must not be rushed.

It will continue to take part in consultation shaping the policy, but says it will oppose it if the conditions are breached.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says the conditions are the sort of detail consultation is expected to cover.

The primary school staff union, the Educational Institute, is also expected to set conditions on the policy this week.
