A group of business leaders will consider what can be done to reduce unemployment among young people in Auckland.
Auckland Mayor Len Brown, The Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall and large companies attended a hui on Wednesday to discuss how to get young people into work.
In Auckland there are about 27,000 people between the ages of 15 and 24 who are neither working nor in education.
Sir Stephen said businesses needed to start investing in young employees.
"What we want to do is get a mindset change for them to really think hard about employing younger people," he said.
"To do that, we're asking them to give us their plans over the next five or six years of what sort of jobs they're going to be having available and, therefore, how do we get those kids into a pipeline of training so that when the job becomes available, they're actually skilled and ready to go."
