A man was taken to hospital with minor injuries just after midnight, after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a power pole, snapping it in half on State Highway 2, just south of Gisborne.

Police said he was able to get out of the vehicle with minor injuries, even though 50,000-volt powerlines were draped over it.

Eastland Energy said power will be out to several houses while contractors install a new power pole.
