Naming rights to waterfront centre sold

Auckland Council has sold the naming rights to its $32 million waterfront events centre, but the value of the deal remains a secret.

ANZ Bank is the sponsor of the Viaduct Events Centre, which opened three years ago.

Neither party will reveal the price, but the ANZ bank says it is millions of dollars and is one of its more signficant sponsorships.

Mayor Len Brown says it is a good deal and that ratepayers will understand the sense of partnerships with the private sector.

The events centre is the biggest publicly-owned landmark in the Wynyard Quarter redevelopment, and has been the venue for shows such as Fashion Week.

It is run by Facilities Auckland, a council agency which says the deal was a while in the making.

The sponsorship is separate from ongoing efforts to find commercial deals for the council.
