Food prices fell in March, driven by cheaper prices for groceries which offset rises in the cost of fruit and vegetables and some meat items.

Official figures show food prices fell 0.3 percent in March, compared with a 1 percent fall in February.

Prices for grocery food fell 1.6 percent, which includes nuts and snacks and bread and cereals.

However, prices for meat, poultry and fish experienced a strong rise, up 0.9 percent while the cost of fruit and vegetables rose 0.5 percent.
