Appeal for would-be horse owners

Kaimanawa horse enthusiasts are urging people to re-home the animals as the date for the annual muster approaches.

About 180 horses will be removed in the Department of Conservation muster is planned for late May. Animals which are not re-homed will be sent to the abbatoir.

Kaimanawa Heritage Horses spokesperson Simone Frewin said a Kaimanawa horse typically costs between $200 to $250.

Ms Frewin said the organisation already has homes for about 70 horses, and is hoping last-minute applications will boost that number.
