Midwife fined for working illegally

A Wellington midwife who worked illegally without a practising certificate has been censured and fined for possibly putting mothers and their babies at risk.

The woman, who's no longer practising, has also been ordered to meet a quarter of costs totalling $58,000.

The tribunal says Cesilia (Tillie) Laufiso worked as a midwife in April 2012 without a practising certificate.

She also failed to comply with a programme designed to ensure key midwifery skills were up to date.

The tribunal says Ms Laufiso struggled financially and felt unsupported.

It says while there was no evidence of harm, there was malpractice and negligence.
