A midwife has told a Coroner's hearing in Wellington that a baby who had a rare liver disorder appeared perfect, except for the colour of his bowel motions.
The baby's mother said she twice took the infant to the doctor and questioned his jaundice but was told there was nothing to worry about.
Blood tests ordered by a different doctor revealed he had a rare liver disorder and despite having a liver transplant he died.
The midwife, Susan Maxwell, said the baby was in good condition at birth but when he was 15 days old she noticed the strange colour of his bowel motions.
She said she talked with her colleagues about what could be done as she knew the mother was worried, but apart from changes to the way he was fed, no one came up with any other solutions.
