Trio caught with snapper surfeit

Three men are likely to face fisheries charges after hundreds of snapper were found stashed under the floor of a boat in Auckland.

Earlier this month, snapper catch limits in Auckland for recreational fishers dropped from nine to seven.

But on Anzac Day, fisheries officers say three men were caught with 220 snapper in their boat at Kawakawa Bay.

The Ministry for Primary Industries district compliance manager, Michael Simmons, says their boat, car and trailer were seized.

Mr Simmons says they will be charged with fisheries offences very soon.

He says staff also caught four men with 1100 cockles at the same beach, 800 more than allowed.
