Navy officer appeals conviction

12:53 pm on 30 April 2014

A navy officer who was dismissed from the service because of a relationship with a subordinate is appealing his conviction and sentence.

Commodore Kevin Keat was found guilty at a court martial in 2013 on five charges of breaching orders by not disclosing an affair and not ending it, as well as threatening behaviour.

At the High Court in Wellington on Wednesday morning, Keats' lawyer, Michael Bott, outlined the grounds for the appeal.

He said when Keat was questioned about an affair, his client said there was no affair because the relationship was over at that point.
