12:29 pm on 5 May 2014

Two people spent Sunday night in hospital after a bus crash crashed into a milk tanker, which had overturned on State Highway One near Mataura in Southland.

Another six people were also taken to hospital but later released. A further seven passengers were treated for minor injuries at the site of the crash.

The bus driver and a woman, 19, in the front seat of the bus spent the night in hospital, but their injuries are not life threatening.

The incident happened at 7.15pm at Mataura, between Gore and Invercargill.

It's not known what caused the tanker to roll, on a straight piece of road, but it was raining heavily at the time. The bus was unable to stop

St John Southern Lakes Districts operations manager Pauline Buchanan told Morning Report two people were flown to Dunedin and Queenstown hospitals and the others were treated in Gore.
