Witness tells court of friend's scream

12:13 pm on 6 May 2014

A witness in the trial of a Hawke's Bay police officer accused of indecently assaulting five young women while working as a volunteer lifeguard director has described a drunken night when an assault allegedly occured.

Constable Adam Dunnett faces several counts of indecent assault while at the Ocean Beach Kiwi Surf Lifesaving Club and Taradale Fire Station between May 2011 and December 2012.

The witness described, to the Napier District Court on Tuesday morning, a night of drinking in 2011 when Mr Dunnett turned up at the Lifesaving Club.

As the night progressed she says she heard her friend scream and found the heavily drunk teenager naked on a bed in a room with Mr Dunnett.

She says, later on, she woke up to see Mr Dunnett standing over her friend with his hands in her underwear.

The defence says Mr Dunnett denies having ever touched the friend that night in an inappropriate way.

The witness admitted there were several things she could not remember, including whether she took part in a drinking game. She said she had only one drink.

Adam Dunnett has denied all the charges and the judge-only trial continues.
