New body 'offensive' - teachers' union

The Post Primary Teachers' Association has told Parliament's Education and Science select committee the Government's plan for a teacher registration and disciplinary body is offensive.

The committee is hearing submissions on a bill that will replace the Teachers Council with a new organisation, the Education Council.

The Bill says the council's members will all be appointed by the Education Minister.

The PPTA says that is offensive because the Government is not trusting teachers to regulate their own profession.

Other submitters, including the Principal's Federation and the Teacher's Council, have also criticised the appointments system saying some or all of the members should be elected by teachers.
