A long-serving Whangarei police officer has died after an accident at the city's BMX track.

Detective Sergeant Andrew Clubley, 49, suffered serious head and neck injuries when he came off a bike at the Pohe Island track on Sunday.

He died in Whangarei Hospital on Tuesday night.
