Auckland mosque closed amid tensions

10:19 pm on 20 May 2014

An Auckland mosque has been closed because of violence and tension between two groups that can't agree over who should be in charge.

The Federation of Islamic Associations, which owns the Avondale Islamic Centre, said on Tuesday it has been closed after an administrator was beaten so badly he spent 10 days in hospital.

A security guard was also attacked and threatened.

The federation said about seven people at the mosque are supporting someone who wants to preach about fighting in Syria against the regime of President Bashar al-Asad.

The federation said it does not want overseas problems brought to New Zealand.
