Southland river warning

4:36 pm on 23 May 2014

Southland residents are being warned to watch out for rapidly rising rivers this weekend, with more heavy rain set to fall in the region.

The Southland Regional Council activated its flood warning on Wednesday and said rivers are running higher than usual and set to rise quickly, due to already saturated soils.

The MetService has forecast bands of torrential rain passing over Fiordland and Southland from Friday now until Sunday.

A council spokesperson said people near rivers and in low-lying areas should be especially vigilant.
