Freezing weather is forecast to hit the South Island and snow is likely to be near sea level in Southland, Clutha and Dunedin.

MetService forecaster Andy Downs said high-altitude areas could expect several centimetres of snow and this would affect the alpine passes and even possibly the motorway north of Dunedin.

Severe south to southwest gales are also forecast in coastal Southland and Otago from about Bluff to the Otago Peninsula.

The forecast is also for heavy rain and high winds on the west of the South Island.

In the North Island, the electricity company PowerCo still has 130 properties to reconnect in Wairarapa and the Tararua district after 4500 lost power because of strong winds over the weekend.

More severe weather is forecast there.
