Wairau Hospital services to stay

Twenty-four-hour acute surgical services are to stay at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board on Thursday announced the results of its long-awaited review.

It was prompted following a public outcry over board plans to cut out-of-hours general and orthopaedic surgery services at Wairau Hospital.

DHB chief executive Chris Fleming said high quality services would continue to be offered in Marlborough.

Mr Fleming said the DHB intends to adopt a one service, two sites model which means some patients may have to travel to get the best treatment, and he welcomed the public's input into how to make that work.
