Mandatory standard for natural cosmetics wanted

Consumer New Zealand wants a mandatory standard for natural cosmetics, after ing that many so-called organic skincare products contain synthetic ingredients.

The agency purchased 18 products, which claimed to be natural, from department stores and supermarkets.

Chief executive Sue Chetwin says only two of the 18 had recognised eco accreditations.

She says most of the products included several ingredients which would not pass any rigorous organic standard.

Ms Chetwin says a list of clear requirements needs to be devised for a product to be deemed natural.
