Work is set to begin on removing a culvert from lower Dudley Creek, as part of the Christchurch City Council's moves to prevent flooding in parts of the city.

The council says contractors will spend the next week removing the Guild Street culvert and creating a wider channel to improve water flow.

The footbridge over the concrete culvert will also be removed and replaced with a new one.

Earlier in June, council staff installed pumps to minimise the backflow of water from where the Flockton Drain and Dudley Creek meet, which has caused severe flooding to nearby houses at least three times this year.
