Murder charge over baby death

12:13 pm on 19 June 2014

A Hamilton man has now been charged with the murder of a baby in the city on Sunday.

The 33-year-old re-appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday morning.

The man was originally charged with assault after the eight-month-old boy was taken to Starship Hospital with head injuries from his Hamilton East home.

He died on Monday evening, and after a post-mortem the charge was been upgraded.

The accused was due to have a bail hearing on Thursday before a Community Magistrate, but due to the more serious charge it must be heard in the High Court.

He's been remanded in custody to next appear in July.

The court agreed to name suppression after a request from the man's lawyer.

The lawyer told the court that for his client's piece of mind and for the whanau as they prepare the boy's tangi, suppression was appropriate.
