A convicted murderer on the run for several months has been arrested in west Auckland.
Michael John Hindman was sentenced to life in prison for murder in 2000 and was wanted for breaching his release conditions since March.
The 55-year-old was arrested at a house in Glen Eden about 1pm on Thursday.
Armed officers surrounded the house and tear gas had to be used after several attempts to get him to give himself up failed.
Police said two people who were inside the house were affected by the gas and had to be given medical treatment.
Officers also spoke to another two people at the house and all four were released without charge.
Hindman will appear in the Waitakere District Court on Friday. Police said the arrest comes after an intensive investigation.
