The number of people who needed to be rescued by surf lifesavers has fallen by more than a third.
Lifesavers spent 213,975 hours between last Labour Weekend and Easter patrolling 80 beaches nationwide and rescuing 1029 people.
Of the rescues, 101 took place at Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel, followed by 56 at Whangamata and 54 at Mount Maunganui.
But the overall number of rescues fell by 37 percent compared to the same period 12 months earlier.
Surf Life Saving chief executive Paul Dalton said the weather played a part.
"It was just really patchy, so all round the country you had a short run (of good weather) for a few days and then it was wet again," Mr Dalton said.
"So just very inconsistent, which didn't encourage a lot of swimming at beaches."
