Sentencing after home surgery on dog

A Tauranga man whose home surgery on a dog's paw led to the paw being amputated has been sentenced to six months' community detention, and 100 hours' community service.

Rangi Waaka, 61, used a surgical blade to removed tendons and bone fragments from the dog's crushed paw, but court documents say he didn't seek professional help for the dog for several months.

Local SPCA investigator Jason Blair said he visited the property in October last year after a tipoff from a member of the public.

Mr Blair said the SPCA would not have known about the dog if not for that phone call.
