The Christchurch City Council has voted to spend an additional $1.69 million to enable the completion of a second tramway loop through the central city.

Welcome Aboard managing director Michael Esposito says it is expects that the extended loop will be in operation in time for the cricket's World Cup beginning in February 2015.

In November, the original loop route is due to be completed, extending the route through to Rolleston Avenue, Armagh Street and New Regent Street.

The second loop will further extended the route along Oxford Terrace through the relocated Re:START mall, Cashel Street Mall to High and Colombo streets looping around Cathedral Square.

Mr Esposito says there has been great interest from inbound travel trade partners keen to promote the attraction.

The tramway loop includes Cathedral Junction.
