Major naval exercise begins in Hawaii

The world's largest naval exercise begins on Saturday in Hawaii, involving New Zealand and 22 other Pacific nations.

HMNZS Canterbury sailed into Pearl Harbour on Friday morning, allowed to dock there for the first time since New Zealand declared its anti-nuclear stance in the 1980s.

The ship's commanding officer David Turner said on Saturday the crew would be working from Ford Island, taking supplies to shore and bringing injured persons back onboard the ship for treatment.

He said he hoped sharing tactics and working alongside New Zealand's allies would mean the navy could offer more effective help when required.
