A father and son who were overdue from a trip to Arthur's Pass returned later than expected on Sunday night. The pair were meant to have returned at 7pm after a day tramp, but the police said they did not return until about 11pm.
A search and rescue team had been preparing to search for the two if they had not returned overnight.
The police said the pair had set out on Saturday morning and were experienced trampers. They said the search and rescue team had been ready to go if needed.
