A coroner reporting on the case of a Lower Hutt fisherman who drowned is calling for a review of lifejacket rules.
Leon Scurrah was returning from a fishing trip with a friend in 2012 when their dinghy capsized in Wellington Harbour about 100 metres from shore.
There were two lifejackets in the boat, but neither man was wearing one when the accident happened.
Wellington coroner Garry Evans is asking the Government to consider whether it should make the wearing of lifejackets compulsory at all times in boats with a length of six metres or less.
Mr Evans said on Tuesday that in 46 of the 113 drowning deaths associated with recreational boating between July 2007 and December 2013, a flotation device was available but not being worn.
