Home detention for accidental death

8:50 pm on 11 July 2014

A council worker who accidentally ran over and killed a four-year-old boy has been sentenced to home detention in the Napier District Court.

The 73-year-old man, who has been granted name suppression, earlier pleaded guilty to reckless driving causing the death of Uetaha Ransfield-Wanoa at Kirkpatrick Park in October last year.

On Friday he was sentenced to six months' home detention, 100 hours of community work, and disqualified from driving for three years.

WorkSafe New Zealand has also laid charges against the Hastings District Council under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
