Police are investigating after the death of a man felling a tree in Feilding.

They say it appears the man, aged in his 60s, was cutting a limb at a Seddon Street property when his safety equipment got caught and pulled him into the trunk of the tree, fatally crushing him on Wednesday.

Initial reports said the man had been electrocuted. Police are trying to clarify the sequence of events.

Worksafe New Zealand has been notified and is investigating.

Police said the man won't be named until his family have been informed.
