Daren Kamali is the first writer of Pacific heritage to be awarded the residency.

The Fiji-born writer and musician will spend three months at the university from August this year and will use the time to pen a collection of Pacific poems to finish his third book Ink Fish Writes Again.

Caren Rangi, the Pacific representative on Creative New Zealand's arts council, says Mr Kamali's unique style makes him a wonderful voice for New Zealand and the Pacific.
